Manchester United Football
Manchester United has won a record 20 Premier League championships, 11 FA Cups, four League Cups, and a record 19 FA Community Shields in English football. Three European Cups, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup have also been won by the club. The team won the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in 1998–99, an unparalleled achievement for an English club.
Eight players were killed in the Munich aviation accident in 1958. Manchester United became the first English football team to win the European Cup in 1968, under the leadership of Matt Busby. From November 1986 to May 2013, when he announced his retirement after 26 years with the club, Sir Alex Ferguson won 25 major awards, for a total of 38. On 9 May 2013, fellow Scot David Moyes was named as his replacement, however owing to his poor performance and results at the club, he was fired and replaced by Louis van Gaal on April 22, 2014.
Manchester United is one of the world's wealthiest and most popular football clubs. Following its first public offering on the London Stock Exchange in 1991, the club was acquired by Malcolm Glazer in May 2005 for over £800 million. Manchester United launched an initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange in August 2012. Manchester United became the first sports team in the world to be valued at $3 billion in January 2013. The club was valued at $3.3 billion by Forbes Magazine, $1.2 billion more than the next most valuable sports team.
